Mattress Off-Gassing: What It Is, How Long It Lasts, and What Vancouver Shoppers Should Know

 

You unbox a new mattress, unroll it, and within minutes there's a smell in the room. Not unpleasant exactly, but chemical. A little like freshly painted walls. You open a window and wonder whether you should be sleeping on this thing tonight or waiting a few days.

That smell has a name: off-gassing. And depending on what your mattress is made of, it can be a mild, temporary inconvenience or something worth thinking about more carefully before you buy.

So, how long should that smell last? Is it safe to sleep on the mattress right away? And does it make a difference if you live in a condo or apartment in Vancouver? 

What Is Mattress Off-Gassing?

Off-gassing is the process of volatile organic compounds, known as VOCs, being released from a product into the surrounding air. It happens with mattresses, but also with furniture, paint, carpet, flooring, and a long list of other household products.

The compounds doing the off-gassing are chemicals used in manufacturing. In mattresses, they come primarily from polyurethane foam, adhesives used to bond layers together, chemical flame retardants, and synthetic materials in the cover.

When a mattress is compressed and vacuum sealed for shipping, those compounds are trapped inside. When the mattress is unboxed and the foam expands, the released gases enter the room air. That's the smell you notice when you first unwrap a new mattress.

Most of the chemicals involved are benign in small quantities and dissipate quickly. Some, however, are worth paying attention to if you're sensitive or if you're sharing a bedroom with young children.

Which Mattress Materials Off-Gas the Most?

Not all mattresses off gas equally. The materials inside determine both the intensity of the initial smell and how long it takes to fully dissipate.

Memory foam is the most well-known off-gassing culprit. Polyurethane foam, the base material of most memory foam, contains a range of chemicals including toluene diisocyanate, formaldehyde, and benzene compounds used during manufacturing. Traditional memory foam off-gassing can produce a noticeable smell that takes anywhere from a few hours to several weeks to fully clear.

Latex foam off-gasses too, but differently. Natural latex has a mild rubber smell that most people find less concerning and that typically clears faster. Synthetic latex uses petrochemical compounds and can off gas more like memory foam. Blended latex falls somewhere in between. If you're sensitive to smells, natural latex is often a better choice.

Innerspring and pocket coil mattresses with minimal foam tend to off-gas less than foam dominant alternatives because there's simply less synthetic material present. The comfort layers still matter, though. A pocket coil mattress with thick memory foam comfort layers will off gas similarly to a foam mattress in those top layers.

Hybrid mattresses vary widely. The coil system itself doesn't off-gas significantly. The foam, latex, and adhesive layers in the comfort system determine the smell.

Natural and organic mattresses using certified natural latex, organic cotton, and wool tend to have the lowest off-gassing profile. Some people still notice a slight natural smell from the rubber or wool, but it's not coming from synthetic chemical compounds.

What Are the Potential Health Risks of Mattress Off-Gassing? 

Some VOCs can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, or airways, and people who are sensitive to them may experience headaches, dizziness, nausea, or breathing discomfort.

For most healthy adults, short-term exposure from a new mattress is unlikely to cause a serious health problem. But that doesn't mean you have to ignore a strong chemical smell or assume that everyone will react to it in exactly the same way.

Children, people with asthma or other breathing sensitivities, seniors, and pregnant people can be more sensitive to indoor air pollutants, according to Health Canada.

Children are also spending a lot of time close to the mattress. A young child may sleep with their face only inches from the surface for many hours at a time. Research looking specifically at mattresses has found that VOC exposure can be higher in the sleeping environment and may be more significant for infants and children under certain conditions.

We know that VOC emissions are generally highest when a new product is first unpacked and then decrease over time. But different mattresses use different materials, and some can continue releasing small amounts of VOCs for much longer than others.

So if a mattress has a strong chemical smell when you first open it, there's really no benefit to rushing the process. Let it breathe.

How Long Does Mattress Off-Gassing Last?

This is one of the most common questions people have after bringing home a new mattress, and there isn’t one exact answer.

For most mattresses, the noticeable “new mattress” smell fades within 24 to 72 hours, particularly if the room has good airflow. Opening a window, using a fan, and giving the mattress some time to breathe can help speed things up.

But there’s a difference between the smell disappearing and all VOC emissions stopping completely. Some mattresses can continue releasing very small amounts of VOCs for weeks or even months, with emissions generally decreasing over time. How long this lasts depends on factors such as the type and density of foam, the materials used in the mattress, and how well the room is ventilated. Some research has found that low-level emissions from polyurethane foam can continue for much longer, although they decrease substantially over time.

What Does CertiPUR-US Actually Certify About Off-Gassing?

You'll see CertiPUR-US referenced constantly in mattress descriptions, including on several products at King of Mattresses. 

CertiPUR-US is a testing and certification program for polyurethane foams. To earn the certification, foam must be tested by an independent accredited laboratory and verified to meet standards for harmful chemical content, specifically: free from ozone depleters, free from heavy metals like mercury and lead, free from formaldehyde, free from certain flame retardants, and with VOC emissions below 0.5 parts per million.

That last point, the VOC emissions cap, directly addresses off-gassing. CertiPUR-US certified foam off-gases at a lower level and with a cleaner chemical profile than uncertified foam.

For off-gassing specifically, CertiPUR-US is a meaningful assurance that the foam's emissions fall within a tested safety threshold. It's the minimum you should expect from any foam mattress. If a foam mattress doesn't carry it, that's worth flagging.

How to Reduce Off-Gassing From a New Mattress

Whether you're particularly sensitive or just prefer not to sleep in a chemically scented room, here are practical steps that actually help.

Air out before sleeping on it. The most effective step is also the simplest. Unbox the mattress and let it expand in a well-ventilated room for 24 to 72 hours before sleeping on it. Open windows if possible. A fan directed at the mattress surface accelerates the process by continuously moving fresh air over the material.

Don't put bedding on immediately. Covering the mattress with sheets and a mattress protector right away traps the off-gassing compounds against the surface rather than allowing them to escape into the room air. Let the mattress breathe first, then make the bed.

Ventilate the bedroom during the initial period. Open windows whenever possible during the first week. Vancouver weather in spring and fall often makes this feasible without making the room uncomfortably cold.

Consider a mattress protector. A good mattress protector creates a physical barrier between you and the mattress surface that can reduce direct exposure to any remaining off-gassing, particularly while you sleep with your face close to the surface.

If you're very sensitive, choose lower off-gassing materials. Natural Talalay latex, GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, and organic cotton and wool covers are the lowest off-gassing options available. They still have a subtle natural smell but it comes from organic materials, not synthetic chemical compounds.

The Certifications That Address Off-Gassing and Chemical Content

CertiPUR-US: Covers polyurethane foam. Verifies VOC emissions below 0.5 ppm and absence of specific harmful chemicals. The baseline for foam safety.

GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): Certifies that latex contains at least 95% certified organic raw latex. Organic Dunlop latex under GOLS certification has a significantly cleaner chemical profile than synthetic or blended latex options.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): Certifies organic textile components including cotton covers and wool. Organic cotton and wool quilting layers have minimal off-gassing and are often chosen by people building a low chemical sleep environment.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100: Tests the finished textile for the presence of a wide range of harmful substances including residues from processing. Relevant for cover materials and quilting.

A mattress carrying GOLS and GOTS certification on its major components has been independently verified to have a low chemical profile throughout its construction.
